THE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INFECTION AND HEALTH AND NUTRITION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CONCERN FACING THE WORLD TODAY. IN LATIN AMERICA IN GENE RAL, AND INCERTAIN GEOGRAPHICAREAS IN PARTICULAR, SOME OF THE MOST PREVALENT HUMAN DISEASES ARE ACQUIRED DIRECTLY FROM ANIMALS. MOREOVER, PER CAPITA FOOD AVAILABILITY HAS NOT INCREASED APPRECIABLY OVER THE PRE VIOUS DECADE BECAUSE OF A NUMBER OF FACTORS, PRIMARY AMONG THEM BEING THAT OF ANIMAL DISEASES. ITS HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT MORE THAN 35 PER CENT OF MEAT PRODUCTION IS LOST BECAUSE OF CERTAIN ZOONOSES. THIS SERIOUS DIMINUTION IN THE AVAILABLE SUPPLIES OF PROTEIN ANIMAL ORIGIN CAUSED BY THE ZOONOSES CONSIDERABLY AGGRAVATES THE TREND IN HUMAN MALNU TRITION IN THE REGION. PROPER CONTROL OF ANIMAL DISEASES WILL SIGNIFI CANTLY INCREASE THE AVAILABILITY OF ANIMAL PROTEIN TO THE PEOPLES OF LATIN AMERICA
