The State Program for the Control of Acute Respiratory Diseases in Children under Five of the Secretariat of Health of Para state, Brazil, is integrated into the state programs of primary health care and oral rehydration therapy, and its purpose is to standardize the diagnoses and treatments of these diseases. In 1982 a manual of standards and procedures was produced for use by medical care personnel in order to standardize treatment, eliminate the wasteful use of antibiotics, and ensure the efficiency of medication. In addition to information on how the program was set up, the paper presents the results of analysis of the data obtained from disease report forms, in which it was found that of the 41 704 patients seen by the health service system, and classed and treated as cases of moderate to severe infection from 1982 to 1984, 32 898 were reevaluated and, of these 31 115 were found to have progressed fairly well and only 32 have died. The data were analyzed on the basis of age groups, medication administered, course taken by the disease, and number of hospitalizations, recoveries and deaths. The article also cites partial findings of research carried out concurrently with the control work for evaluation in the home of cases of moderate infection who did not return to the unit for observation
