Abstract
El consumo de alcohol está asociado con diversa enfermedades transmisibles y no transmisibles, así como con trastornos de salud mental, que pueden hacer que una persona sea más vulnerable a la COVID-19. En particular, como el alcohol afecta el sistema inmunitario, aumenta las probabilidades de contraer la infección y de tener resultados de salud adversos. El consumo excesivo de alcohol es también un factor de riesgo de neumonía y otras infecciones pulmonares y del síndrome de dificultad respiratoria aguda, que es una de las principales complicaciones de la COVID-19. De acuerdo con la evidencia preliminar, el consumo crónico de alcohol es un factor de riesgo probable con respecto a la gravedad de la COVID-19, pero actualmente no se está recopilando de manera sistemática información de los pacientes a este respecto.
