Abstract
[Executive Summary]. This document is a progress report on gender mainstreaming (GM) in the health sector in the Region of the Americas. It is based on a review of results documented by PAHO and in scientific publications and consultations with experts in the field of gender and health. Based on this evidence, it draws conclusions on the state of progress and identifies challenges that stand in the way of more rapid progress toward gender equality in health throughout the Region...One of the main findings of this report was that results-based programs are needed in order to implement the GM strategy to promote gender equality in conjunction with the strategy for the empowerment of women. This should be done within a framework that incorporates basic institutional processes for gender mainstreaming (“institutional GM”). Achieving this goal requires proactive, attentive, and expert effort; human and financial resources; and sustained political will over time...
