The effectiveness of an indirect diagnostic test of massive use in discriminating procedures is assessed by means of conditional probabilities and application of the Bayes theorem. Examples are given of estimates of diagnostic errors and of he true prevalence rate. For studies on populations where the presence of positive animals can be regards as a rare event, the relationship, existing between the size of the sampling and the probability of failure to detected positives is discussed.
