The Ministry of Health of Venezuela received a report on 27 February 2004 (Epidemiological Week/EW 8) on the death of monkeys in the town of Caserío El Salto, along the Morichal Largo river near the city of Maturín, Monagas state. Due to the threat that the epizootic might have been caused by the yellow fever virus, health authorities immediately took the necessary measures for epizootic and epidemiological surveillance, vaccination against yellow fever, and social mobilization. El Ministerio de Salud de Venezuela fue informado el 27 de febrero del 2004, (Semana Epidemiológica/SE No. 8) sobre la muerte de monos en la localidad Caserío El Salto, Río de Morichal Largo, Municipio de Maturín, Estado de Monagas. Inmediatamente, debido a la sospecha de tratarse de una epizootia causada por el virus de la fiebre amarilla, las autoridades de salud toman las medidas pertinentes en cuanto a vigilancia de epizootias, vigilancia epidemiológica, vacunación antiamarílica y de movilización social.
