Epidemiological Alert, On Probable Influenza A(H1N1) 2009 Outbreaks (20 April 2011)

Abstract

Since the beginning of 2011, in the region of the Americas, there have been significant outbreaks of influenza A (H1N1) 2009, that while geographically limited, have generated a significant demand on health services. For instance, there have been outbreaks in Ecuador (January 2011), Mexico and Venezuela (March 2011). In the past three weeks (SE 13-15), the Dominican Republic’s National Influenza Centre has detected an increase in the positive samples of influenza A(H1N1) 2009. In the last month, other sporadic detections have occurred in Cuba, Colombia, Honduras, Jamaica and El Salvador.

Desde el inicio del 2011, en la Región de las Américas se notificaron brotes del virus de influenza A(H1N1) 2009 que -aunque limitados geográficamente- han generado una demanda importante en los servicios de salud. Ejemplo de ello han sido los brotes registrados en Ecuador (enero 2011), México y Venezuela (marzo 2011). En las últimas tres semanas (SE 13-15) el Centro Nacional de Influenza (NIC) de República Dominicana ha detectado un aumento en el número de muestras positivas para influenza A(H1N1) 2009. Asimismo, detección esporádica del virus se ha producido en el último mes en Cuba, Colombia, Honduras, Jamaica y El Salvador.
