Abstract
On 22 May, Germany reported a significant increase in the number of patients with haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and bloody diarrhoea caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). Since 2 May 2011 and up to 7 June 2011, a total of 661 cases of HUS and 1,672 cases of non-HUS STEC have been reported from European Union Member States; this includes 630 HUS cases and 1,601 non-HUS STEC cases in Germany alone. The majority of cases are adults and more than two thirds of them are women. Sixteen of the HUS cases and six of the STEC cases have resulted in deaths.
 
El 22 de mayo, Alemania informó de un aumento significativo en el número de pacientes con síndrome hemolítico urémico (SHU) y diarrea con sangre causadas por E. coli productora de toxina Shiga (STEC). Desde el 2 de mayo y hasta el 6 de Junio 2011, se han registrado 661 casos de SHU y 1.672 casos STEC no-SHU en los Estados de la Unión Europea, incluidos 630 casos de SHU y 1.601 casos STEC no-SHU en Alemania. La gran mayoría de los casos son adultos y más de dos tercios mujeres. Dieciséis de los casos de SHU y seis de casos de STEC resultaron fatales.
