As of the 21st of September 2011, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative had reported 401 cases of poliomyelitis caused by wild poliovirus; 147 were registered in endemic countries1 and 254 in non-endemic countries. Of the total registered cases, 343 were due to wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) and 58 to wild virus type 3 (WPV3). The Region of the Americas has remained free of the circulation of wild poliovirus since 1991. On the 20th of September 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued an alert reporting the circulation of wild poliovirus WPV1 in China which is genetically linked to the virus currently circulating in Pakistan. As of the 21st of September 2011, Pakistan had reported 89 cases of poliomyelitis due to wild poliovirus (88 due to WPV1 and one due to WPV3). This is higher than the same period last year when 52 cases were reported. Hasta el 21 de septiembre de 2011, la Iniciativa Global para la Erradicación de la Poliomielitis registró a nivel mundial 401 casos de poliomielitis causados por el virus salvaje, de los cuales 147 se registraron en países endémicos1 y 254 en países no endémicos. Del total de casos registrados, 343 fueron debidos al virus salvaje tipo 1 (WPV1) y 58 al virus salvaje tipo 3 (WPV3). La Región de las Américas ha permanecido libre de la circulación del virus salvaje de la poliomielitis desde 1991. El 20 de septiembre de 2011 una alerta emitida por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) informó sobre la circulación, en China, del virus salvaje de polio WPV1 que genéticamente está vinculado al virus que circula en Pakistán. Al 21 de septiembre del 2011, Pakistán notificó 89 casos de poliomielitis debido a poliovirus salvaje (88 por WPV1 y uno por WPV3). Esta cifra es superior a la registrada (52) en el mismo periodo en el año anterior.
