Epidemiological Alert, Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (27 June 2013)

Abstract

In 2002, the first two isolates of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) were reported in the United States.1,2 Isolates with vancomycin resistance mechanism were associated with the combination of the resistance genes of type Enterococcus faecalis Van A. By 2012, 11 isolates of VRSA had been reported, 9 of which were isolated in the United States, one in Iran and one in India.3,4,5 Most of the 9 isolates in the United States were isolated in the state of Michigan. In general, they caused skin and soft tissue infections in patients with underlying chronic diseases.

En 2002 se publicaron los dos primeros aislamientos de Staphylococcus aureus resistente a vancomicina (SARV) en los Estados Unidos1,2. Los aislamientos con el mecanismo de resistencia a vancomicina estaban asociados a la conjugación de genes de resistencia del tipo Van A de Enterococcus faecalis. Hasta el año 2012 se notificaron 11 aislamientos de SARV, 9 de los cuales se aislaron en los Estados Unidos, uno en Irán y uno en India3,4,5. De los 9 aislamientos de Estados Unidos la mayoría han sido encontrados en el estado de Michigan. En general, causaron infecciones principalmente de piel y partes blandas en pacientes con enfermedades crónicas subyacentes.
