Epidemiological Alert, Chikungunya and dengue fever in the Americas (29 August 2014)

Abstract
The first evidence of autochthonous chikungunya transmission in the Americas was recorded in December 2013, since then, autochthonous transmission has been detected in 33 countries and territories of the Americas (27 countries and territories in the Caribbean, 3 countries in Central America, 1 country and 1 territory in South America and 1 country in North America).1,2 As of epidemiological week (EW) 35 of 2014, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has been informed of a total of 659,367 cases, including 37 deaths, in the Americas.
 
Desde la confirmación de la transmisión autóctona del virus chikungunya en la Región de las Américas en diciembre de 2013, se ha documentado transmisión autóctona en 33 países y territorios de la Región de las Américas (27 países y territorios en el Caribe1,2, tres países de Centroamérica, un país y un territorio en Sudamérica y en un país de Norteamérica). El número de casos notificados hasta la semana epidemiológica (SE) 35 de 2014 a la Organización Panamericana de la Salud / Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS) asciende a 659.367, incluyendo 37 defunciones.
