Epidemiological Update, Chikungunya Fever (24 January 2014)

Abstract

Since the first report received by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) / World Health Organization (WHO) of autochthonous transmission of chikungunya infection on 6 December 2013, there are now six territories in the Region of the Americas, in the Caribbean, that have notified cases; these are the British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Martin (French) and Sint Maarten (Dutch). The total number of cases registered has reached 786. In addition, imported cases have been registered during this time in French Guiana (one imported case from Martinique and one from Saint Martin) and in Dominica (one imported case from Saint Martin). Thus far, the health services capacities of the concerned countries and territories have not been exceeded.

Desde la notificación a la Organización Panamericana de Salud (OPS) / Organización Mundial de Salud (OMS) de los primeros casos autóctonos de infección por chikungunya, el 6 de diciembre del 2013 en la isla de San Martin (territorio francés), otros cinco territorios en la Región de las Américas, en el Caribe, han notificado transmisión autóctona: Guadalupe, Islas Vírgenes Británicas, Martinica, San Bartolomé y San Martin (territorio holandés). El total de casos registrados asciende a 786. En este período también se han registrado casos importados en Guyana francesa (uno importado de Martinica y otro de San Martin) y en Dominica (un caso importado de San Martin). Hasta el momento, la capacidad de los servicios de salud no ha sido sobrepasada en ninguno de estos países y territorios.
