Epidemiological Update, Cholera (9 September 2015)

Abstract

Since the beginning of 2015 up to epidemiological week (EW) 32 of 2015, a total of 21,227 cases have been recorded in three countries in the Region of the Americas: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. Haiti alone registered 98% (20,830) of the total cases in the Region of the Americas. Meanwhile in Brazil, the isolation of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1, serotype Ogawa in samples from a treatment plant wastewater in the Federal District was reported in EW 33 of 2015. The finding was confirmed by the National Reference Laboratory for Diagnosis of Enteric bacterial Infections of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) in Rio de Janeiro.

Desde inicios de este año y hasta la semana epidemiológica (SE) 32 de 2015 se registraron un total de 21.227 casos de cólera en tres países de la Región: Cuba, Haití y República Dominicana, siendo Haiti el país donde se registra el 98% (20.830) del total de casos de la Región de las Américas. Por otro lado, en Brasil, en la SE 33 se notificó el aislamiento de Vibrio cholerae serogrupo O1, serotipo Ogawa, toxigénico, en muestras provenientes de una estación de tratamiento de aguas residuales en el Distrito Federal. El hallazgo fue confirmado por el Laboratorio de Referencia Nacional en Diagnostico de Enteroinfecciones Bacterianas de la Fundación Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ) de Rio de Janeiro.
