Epidemiological Alerts and Updates. Annual Report 2013

Abstract

This Annual Report is a compilation of the Epidemiological Alerts and Updates published by the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) in 2013. The Alerts and Updates address public health events that occurred within and outside the Region of the Americas, and that had or could have had an impact on international public health in the Americas... All the Alerts and Updates published in 2013 addressed communicable diseases. Included among these diseases were some of the newest in the world, such human infection caused by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and Influenza caused by the new Avian Influenza A subtype (H7N9). Other notable alerts concerned the autochthonous transmission of cholera in mainland Americas and the initial reports of chikungunya virus in the Caribbean marking the first time autochthonous chikungunya transmission was detected in the Americas.

El Informe Anual 2013 presenta todas las Alertas y Actualizaciones Epidemiológicas publicadas en el año por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS) en relación con eventos de salud pública que ocurrieron en la Región de las Américas y en otras partes del mundo, y que tuvieron de hecho o pudieron haber tenido repercusiones en la salud pública internacional de la Región… Por todo ello la oportuna detección, verificación, evaluación de riesgo y comunicación que realizan los Estados Miembros en relación con los eventos que pueden convertirse en una emergencia de salud pública internacional, resulta fundamental para que todos los países de la región estén alertados y conozcan las medidas que deben tomar para prepararse o mitigar su impacto. La publicación y difusión de las alertas y actualizaciones es el resultado del trabajo conjunto entre la OPS/OMS y los Estados Miembros, y este informe anual refleja esa estrecha cooperación.
