Abstract
In September 2010, PAHO Member States approved the Strategy and Plan of Action for the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis by Resolution 50/15 at the 50th Directing Council Meeting8 aimed at: a)reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV to 2% or less, b) reducing the incidence of pediatric HIV cases to 0.3 or less per 1,000 live births, and c) reducing the incidence of congenital syphilis to 0.5 casesi or less per 1,000 births by 2015.This report describes the current status of progress in the Region towards the Elimination Initiative goals, highlights gaps and challenges, and presents recommendations for future action to achieve these goals
 
En la Reunión del 50 Consejo Directivo de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud que se llevó a cabo en septiembre de 2010, los Estados miembros de la OPS aprobaron la Estrategia y Plan de Acción para la Eliminación de la transmisión maternoinfantil del VIH y de la sífilis congénita y la Resolución 50/15 dirigida a: a-la reducción de la trasmisión de la madre a hijo del VIH al 2% o menos; b-reducir la incidencia de casos pediátricos de VIH a 0,3 o menos por cada 1.000 nacidos vivos, y c-reducir la incidencia de sífilis congénita a 0,5 casos o menos por cada 1.000 nacimientos en 2015. Este informe describe el estado actual de los progresos realizados en la Región por la Iniciativa para lograr llegar a los objetivos de eliminación de la transmisión maternoinfantil. Se destacan algunas lagunas y los desafíos a los que se debe enfrentar. Así mismo presenta recomendaciones para la acción futura para lograr estos objetivos
