It is estimated than more than 130 million girls and women have undergone genital mutilation. Two million more are at risk every year. This joint statement by WHO, UNICEF and UNFPA describes what female mutilation is, why it occurs, what adverse effects it has on the health and development of girls and women, and how it can be eliminated. This traditional practice is not only physically and psychologically damaging but also a violation of human rights. The statement condemns female genital mutilation and, in the best interests of those at risk, calls for its abolition
