Improving the health of adults in the Americas is one of the greatest challenges that health authorities of the Region must confront. This is due not only to the growing number of adult men and women but also to the fact that since adults bear the brunt of the responsability for economic development, their work paves the way for their own well-being as well as that of their families and community. Adults play an active role as productive agents in the process of development, while simultaneously providing an example to younger generations. The concept of adulthood is not easy to define. A simple classification by age does not provide a clear or accurate idea of the complexity of the category. Many criteria are involved. One of the main ones, once the physical growth and psychological development of adolescence have been attained, is the individual's acceptance of his or her responsibilities in the productive process of economic development Available in Spanish.
