WE CALL CUTANEOUS MYCOSES THE CONDITIONS PRODUCED BY FUNGI THAT SETTLE ON THE EPIDERMIS AND ADJACENT CUTANEOUS TISSUES. CUTANEOUS MYCOSES MAY BE DIVIDED IN TWO GROUPS:(1) THE SUPERFICIAL MYCOSES, WHICHSETTLE ON THE HORNY LAYER OR THE EXTRAFOLLICULARPARTS OF HAIRS, AND IN WHICH THERE DOES NOT USUALLY EXIST HOST CELLULAR RESPONSE; UNDER THIS HEADING WE HAVE PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR; AND (2) THE CUTANEOUS MYCOSES PROPER, IN WHICH THE PARASITE AFFIXES ITSELF TO THE SUPERFICIAL LAYERS OF THE EPI DERMIS AND ITS METABOLIC PRODUCTS TRIGGER IN THE HOST A SERIES OF IMMUNO LOGIC CHANGES THAT ARE OFTEN ACCOMPANIED BY LOCAL INFLAMATIONS OR BY ERUPTIONS A DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE AFFECTED AREA
