The Pan American Health Organization established the following strategies to help the countries decrease the magnitude and frequency of the main health problems affecting to adults and elders: promotion of health and chances in lifestyles through interventions, specially those directed to the entire population; an analysis and rationalization of the use of complex and expensive technologies to correct major inequities and avoid unnecessary costs. The following problems in the field are described: noncommunicable diseases, risk factors and other pathological and social conditions including drug addiction, alcoholism, accidental injuries as well as mental illnesses and neurologic disorders This text has been extracted from Health Conditions in the Americas, 1990 edition, Volume I, Scientific Publication No. 524 (ISBN 92 75 11524 9), which was prepared by the Pan American Health Organization, Regional Office of the World Health Organization
