Abstract

English: A key function of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is to disseminate information on the health situation and trends in the Region of the Americas. The Organization has performed this function without interruption since 1956, the first year in which an assessment of the health status of the population in the Americas was published. Entitled Summary of Reports on Health Conditions in the Americas 1950-1953, that report was presented to the 15th Pan American Sanitary Conference, held in Santiago, Chile, in 1954. In 1966, the name of the report was changed to Health Conditions in the Americas, and from that year on it has been published every four years under that title. Continuing the tradition, the 1998 edition, entitled Health in the Americas, becomes the twelfth publication in this series of quadrennial reports. It is being presented to the 25th Pan American Sanitary Conference in September 1998. / Spanish: Una de las funciones esenciales de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) es difundir información sobre la situación de la salud y sus tendencias en la Región de las Américas. Esta función se cumple en forma ininterrumpida desde 1956, año en que se publicó por primera vez una evaluación del estado de salud de la población de las Américas bajo el título de “Resumen de los informes sobre las condiciones sanitarias en las Américas”; este resumen había sido presentado a la XIV Conferencia Sanitaria Panamericana, celebrada en Santiago, Chile, en 1954. En 1966, el informe cambió su nombre por el de Las condiciones de salud en las Américas, y con este título se siguió publicando cada cuatro años. La salud en las Américas, edición correspondiente a 1998 y duodécima publicación de esta serie de informes cuadrienales, da continuidad a este proceso y se presenta a la XXV Conferencia Sanitaria Panamericana en septiembre de 1998.
