The last case of polio in the Americas caused by indigenous wild poliovirus occurred in Perú in August 1991. Since that time, intensive surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis cases has failed to confirm any other polio cases and an independent commission has certified the Region polio-free, based on ntional surveillance data from all the countries
