The paper describes the conceptual framework and methodological features of an education program in perinatal and maternal and child health with community participation carried out in 1984 by the Catholic Pontifical University of Chile in a low-income quarter of Santiago. A participative education methodology was chosen with a view toward determining popular beliefs and myths about perinatal health, and also in order to train the health team, design innovative teaching materials and set in motion changes in the university's pre-and postgraduate pediatric curricula so as to adapt the course content to the real life conditions of the population. In a subsequent action phase it will be endeavored to broaden the experience and extend it to other regions of the country
