Currently mote than 75 percent of the facilities for the desinfection of drinking water in Latin America and the Caribbean fail to perform their function adequately and on a continuing basis. In view of this situation, in 1982 the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) undertook a project to encourage the development of technology for on-site generation of mixed oxidant gases for disinfection of drinking water supplies (MOGGOD), with a view to their use in small and remote communities within the subregion. The basic concept behing this initiative is to use high-level technology to develop simple, practical, and effective disinfection methods that would help to solve the problems that have hindered disinfection by conventional means in the countries of the subregion. The present article offers a detailed report on the background, concept, development, and current status of this PAHO project. Early results have been very encouraging and justify continuation of this effort. In this way it is hoped to rekindle awareness of the fundamental importance of drinking-water disinfection and to encourage the improvement of techniques and practices currently applied in this field
