Canda's response to the AIDS epidemic is orchestrated at the Federal Government level by the Federal Center for AIDS (FCA), created in 1987. The Center is made up of six bureaus. The Bureau of Program Analysis and Resoures is the focal point for policy and program development. The Bureau of Prevention and Services program focuses on education and awareness strategies, liaison with health care workers and community groups, and the psychosocial aspects of the epidemic. The Bureau of Epidemiology and Surveillance monitors trends and assesses the extent of the disease. The Bureau of Laboratories and Research, with its divisions of retrovirology and immunology, provides reference services for laboratories engaged in HIV screening and diagnosis, an collaborates with national and international researchers. The Bureau of External Cooperation promotes international collaboration in all areas Bureau of Clinical Studies promotes studies and drugs and vaccines. Important roles in the fight against AIDS are also played by the National Health Research and Development Program, privincial and territorial governments, and community-based support groups. Canada is an active participant in international efforts to combat AIDS through WHO, PAHO, and other agencies
