Abstract
En una muestra aleatoria de 600 estudiantes de 11o grado se estudió la asociación del consumo de cigarrillos con diversos factores. Mediante un análisis de regresión logística se evaluaron las distintas variables relacionadas con el consumo. Se destacaron, por orden de importancia, el tabaquismo del grupo preferido de amigos, la impulsividad, el consumo del mejor amigo, el sexo y la autoevaluación del rendimiento académico. Se halló una asociación inversa de menor importancia con la actitud negativa hacia el consumo de cigarrillos, el conocimiento de sus efectos nocivos y la práctica frecuente del deporte. No se hallaron asociaciones del tabaquismo de los escolares sin su autoestima ni con el patrón de conducta tipo A. La información suministrada por los estudiantes con respecto al consumo de cigarrillos fue validada por medio de pruebas de laboratorio
