En 1967 se aisló el virus Mayaro en un ave migratoria en Luisiana. Se trata del primer aislamiento de esta clase. No se hallaron anticuerpos de virus Mayaro en las muestras de sangre de seres humanos y aves de las zonas circunvecinas (AU)
