At the request of the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardization six laboratories situated in four countries undertook a collaborative study of two samples of a common batch of oleandomycin, of which the first was proposed as the international standard preparation and the second was the reference prepration of the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America. The material was assayed by plate diffusion methods which varied in details of technique and design. On the basis of the results obtained and in agreement with the laboratories which took part in the collaborative study the proposed preparation has been established as the international standard for oleandomycin and its value has been fixed at 850 IU/mg; the international unit of leandomycin has been defined as the activity in 0.001176 mg of the international standarden_US
