The First Regional Hospital Conference held in Bogotá, Colombia, 30 October-4 November 1966, received the strong support of the Pan American Health Organization because the agency considered it a beginning of the movement to develop a continent-wide hospital system Medical care and public health have become fused into a single field of endeavor, with the modern hospital as an expression of the health needs of a community; in that role the hospital should be organized, coordinated, and operated under the new concept of integration A hospital building program is basic to the effective application of coordinated health plans, and should respond to principles of efficiency and economy. A modern hospital, furthermore, should be projected toward the community and should adhere to every postulate of preventive and social medicine by using all collective and individual means of communication available to present-day society. It should, moreover, receive the cooperation of scientifically compentent staff, endowed with a broad vision and an understanding of the importance of its own functions and those of its collaborators(AU)
