In establishing the objectives of a functional hospital plan, consideration must be given to the size and resources of the community to be served. The hospital should be regarded as a comprehensive medical care service to the community and a teaching and research unit as well A functional hospital program should adhere to essential concepts of technical integration and coordination, and should provide for progressive patient care of three types: ambulatory, domicialiary, and institutional. The hospital units and equipment should be distributed according to the details of the plans for organization, development, and future expansion of the activities The services and units within the hospital that should be taken into account in the functional program, in order to define the areas to be covered by each one, equipment required, and distribution and coordination within the establishment, are the following: (1) outpatient care; (2) inpatient facilities; (3) domiciliary service; (4) emergency service; (5) intermediate services; (6) surgery and obstetrics; (7) sterilization facilities; (8) general services; (9) administration; (10) facilities for the medical staff; (11) mechanical installations According to a functional plan, the hospital should be divided into three areas, two lateral and one central.
