The PAHO medical records program includes education and training of personnel, advisory services in vital and health statistics, and the publication of educational material To fulfill medical records functions, personnel are required at the professional (university-trained) and intermediate (medical records librarian) levels who, in addition to their own work, will be responsible for the training of medical records auxiliaries. These auxiliaries will assist in large hospitals and will be in charge of medical records in smaller hospitals The author estimates the number of personnel needed in the Americas, describes the courses being conducted in some Latin American countries, and offers suggestions on the training and orientation of personnel PAHO has helped several countries to initiate and operate courses by providing experts and establishing minimum requirements for a satisfactory medical records system: clinical history, procedures, hospital and patient statistics, etc In the field of publications, PAHO has issued various handbooks, manuals, and articles, as well as visual aids, which instructors and students have found to be very useful(AU)
