Abstract
Hospital statistics can be used at the international, national, local, and data-originating levels. Comparative analysis at the international level makes it possible to evaluate the changes that have occurred in succeeding periods and to establish practical medical goals for the future; these concepts can be applied at the national and local levels and the results of the analysis can be used for purposes of health planning in the area concerned as well as to define the health conditions of the population. However, it is at the data-originating level that hospital statistics are most useful, for physicians and medical services as well as for patients, since they bring to light defects that are well worth correcting
 
PAHO has initiated a project designed to help countries obtain and use hospital statistics depending on their capacity to process the data. Hospital records activities, through advisory services and training of medical records personnel, have been stressed. Advisory services have been provided on development of data-processing systems to obtain the much needed information on medical and nursing services, on hospital utilization, on costs in relation to services, and on administrative matters
 
A survey has been made of electronic computers and personnel employed, as well as of information processing, and PAHO is providing the countries with assistance in the light of the findings ...(AU)
