The author draws attention to the disparity between the work done in the field of environmental sanitation in the Americas, and the number of engineers trained He then describes the various methods of training sanitary engineers, including the approach adopted in university courses, in postgraduate courses, and in short intensive courses An examination of the training given at these various levels brings out some of its basic deficiencies: (a) the enormous scope and the superficiality of training in sanitary engineering in the curricula for civil engineering; (b) the unbalanced nature of the programs, poor interpretation of methods, limited number of fellowships, and defects in the extent of the postgraduate courses; and (c) the shortcomings of the short intensive courses The author emphasizes the need for the establishment of closer relations between universities and official or private agencies, active in the field of sanitary engineering, and suggests that there should be organized a second meeting of deans and faculty members of the main Latin American institutions providing training in sanitary engineering, similar to that held in Lima, Peru, in 1961(AU)
