Abstract
The critical path method (CPM) was utilized to formulate, at a decision-making level, the alternatives for the construction of an oncological center and the installation of a telecobalt therapy unit in San Jose, Costa Rica

The three possible solutions were presented as alternate paths which met at a single point where the equipment acquisition and supply process also culminated. The three alternatives follow the same routes as far as installation is concerned, but with respect to the operation of the unit, two alternatives (those involving provisional facilites) separate

Presentation of the situation in a single diagram and computation of the time required by each alternative made it possible to obtain additional elements and information necessary to make a decision

In the process some variants of the normal CPM were introduced, including the preparation of a "summary diagram" which makes possible a rapid appreciation of the situation

The conclusion reached is that the use of modern programming methods for studying various possible alternatives appears practical, useful and meaningful. Use of these methods as a complement to a project's "work plan" is recommended(AU)
