The National Nursing School of Guatemala recently carried on an educational project which consisted of the integration of the theory and practice of health education into the curriculum Its purpose was to train the school staff how to guide their students in their educational tasks. The WHO Health Educator and WHO Consultant on Nursing Training jointly collaborated in this project The project consisted of two stages: the first, planning, and the second, a series of observations of the practical work of students in various clinical fields, made by the health educator jointly with the corresponding instructors. Observations were made on the basis of: evaluation of the application of teaching principles, teaching methods used, course content, and the advantage taken of suitable teaching opportunities At subsequent meetings between instructors and students the teaching skills of the student under observation were analyzed. On completion of in-service observations, recommendations were made for improving the training in each pertinent field of practice The recommendations made at the end of the project were to put education into practice during the three-year course of nursing training at the National Nursing School of Guatemala It is not yet possible to make an evaluation of all the results of this project, since it is difficult to assess improvement in the ability to teach health matters ...(AU)
