Nontreponemal tests for syphilis using cardiolipin antigens have largely replaced the older tests employing lipoidal antigens. Several "screening" tests suitable for excluding syphilis have been developed. The number of treponemal tests is increasing, and four are included for the first time in the Manual of Serologic Tests for Syphilis (4), published periodically by the United States Public Health Service. There is considerable demand for treponemal tests as diagnostic aids in differentiating between serologic reactions that are due to syphilis and the biologic false positive reactions. More treponemal tests are being performed in public health and clinical laboratories. Principal findings from the evaluation of 38 nontreponemal and treponemal tests in the SERA Study (1) and summarized The application of a fluorescent antibody technique to the identification of the Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (2) provides a simple definite method of diagnosis without the use of cultures(AU)
