Abstract
Data collected by the Pan American Committee on Typhus show the prevalence of the disease during the 4-year period 1942-1945, in the following American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, United States, Venezuela, Curaçao, Virgin Islands, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. No cases were reported from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Uruguay, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, French Possessions, the Guianas, British Honduras and Alaska. During 1945, no cases were reported from Argentina or Brazil. The largest figures shown for each country are: Argentina 103(1943); Bolivia, 644(1943); Brazil 41(1943); Colombia 1,038(1943), 949(1944); Costa Rica 7(1945); Cuba 5(1942 and 1943); Chile 566(1942), 626(1943), 733(1944); Ecuador 652(1944); El Salvador 7(1944); Guatemala 2,525(1942), 1,272(1943), 2,144(1944), 802(1945); Mexico 2,752(1942), 2,973(1943), 2,116(1944), 1,335(1945); Panama 2(1942); Peru 2,101(1942), 1,408(1943), 1,466(1944); United States 3,725(1942), 4,517(1943), 5,337(1944), 802(1945); Venezuela 120(1944); Curaçao 7(1944); Virgin Islands 27(1944); Jamaica 68(1942); Puerto Rico 193(1944).
