This report supplements the data published in this Bulletin for September, 1945, p. 782. Thirty positive cases of yellow fever were found along the borders of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, during the latter part of 1945. The accepted endemic area must therefore include regions from the foothills of the Andes Mountains to the basin of Lake Maracaibo, to an altitude of 600 meters. Tests made on serums from persons living in the central jungle lands have proved negative. Permanent yellow fever services are maintained in the urban areas near the eastern part of the country. The aedes indexes are as follows: Ciudad Bolívar, 0.2-5; Upata, San Félix and El Palmar, 1-8. Because of the new endemic area, an antilarval service has been set up in the city of Maracaibo, where a recent Aedes index was 14.8. An antilarval service will also be organized in La Guayra and Aedes indexes are to be determined in the most important towns. At present there are 78 viscerotomy posts and it is expected that the 200 Rural Treatment Stations will soon be provided with the necessary equipment for this work. From 1941 to 1945, 48 cases proved positive among 1,370 viscerotomies. All personnel connected with airports is to be vaccinated against yellow fever. In rural areas, in 1942-1946, 161,765 persons were vaccinated, which covers more than 80 per cent of the population directly threatened. The Ministry of Health is ...(AU)en_US
