Abstract
Work on health problems is progressing in Bolivia, under the New Department of Health, of the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Welfare. Such subjects as malaria, tuberculosis, venereal disease, leprosy, typhus, intestinal parasites, smallpox, typhoid fever, yellow fever, bubonic plague, are being paid special attention. An extensive study of native food products is being made in order to establish a better diet for the people in general. Considerable thought is being given to the health of school children and school physicians have done their part in examining them for chronic diseases and also for incipient troubles which may be corrected at early stages. Plans are being made to create special schools for retarded, deaf and dumb, and blind children. A total of 28 per cent of the children examined were found to have dental caries. Children needing corective glasses were furnished them. Inspection of the manufacture and sale of drugs has continued. Regulations concerning narcotics were rigidly enforced. From August 1944 to August 1945 the National Bacteriological Institute prepared a total of 883,798 doses of various products. New constructions include: in La Paz Department, Broncho-pulmonary Hospital and operating pavilion at the Miraflores General Hospital in La Paz, costing about $120,000; Public Welfare Building, costing about $20,000; and enlarging the Miraflores General Hospital ...(AU)
