Abstract

The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare of Mexico has been carrying out programs aimed at maintaining the eradication of smallpox and yellow fever and controlling and, finally, eradicating diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, rabies and rheumatic fever

Immunization campaigns against communicable diseases are being undertaken among children under 15 years of age; in other cases, the children are immunized as early as possible and a booster dose is given them when they reach school age

In accordance with an agreement with the Pan American Sanitary Bureau, the Government of Mexico has embarked on a special rabies control program on the northeastern frontier of the country. However, to be successful it is necessary to extend activities to the remainder of the frontier including urban areas and the adjacent rural areas

The States of Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas have launched a program of detection, treatment and prophylactic control of cases of rheumatic fever since the prevalence rate is 5 per 100,000 in groups of apparently well children. In the above-mentioned states 362,000 children will be screened, and about 1,800 of them will be selected for treatment
