Abstract
Large-scale immunization against certain infectious diseases is the only reliable and therefore useful measure for their control in certain cases. Before a decision to use mass immunization programs is made, basic data on the following are needed: the place of the disease on the priority list; the existing morbidity and mortality; susceptible population; amount of effective vaccine required; and evaluation of the program. Improved data nad records will be needed to facilitate the estimates, particularly in countries with poor information
 
Data on communicable diseases may be compiled from various sources, such as records of notifiable diseases; death records; and records of patients in hospitals, clinics, and home visits
 
Appropriate procedures for improving reporting were detailed 15 years ago at the Seminar on Reporting of Communicable Diseases sponsored by PASB and the Government of Chile in 1953, yet little progress has been made in adopting the system. A few examples in this regard are given, particularly the situation of data collection in Brazil
 
In the case of intensive short-term campaigns it is recommended that basic data collection be reduced to the minimum and a simple form be used to classify the number of vaccinations in order to facilitate the work. In continuing and long-term programs, on the other hand, a larger volume of data can be collected
