Abstract
The differentiation of smallpox from other vesicular diseases is an essential part of the maintenance phase of smallpox eradication, and therefore requires active laboratory participation

In order to introduce standard diagnostic techniques to national virus laboratories in Central and South America and to study several aspects of smallpox vaccine production, the Pan American Sanitafy Bureau in cooperation with the Institute Adolfo Lutz (São Paulo, Brazil) and the National Communicable Disease Center (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) organized three courses at which 27 virologists participated. A seminar was also held in Rio de Janeiro in 1968 to study the results of smallpox suspect specimens examined at laboratories of the area between January 1966 and September 1968

Biennial seminars are being planned in order that virologists throughout the Western Hemisphere may continue to exchange experiences and information, and that once smallpox eradication is accomplished, the laboratories may deal with the other viral diseases(AU)
