The sucess of the national food and nutrition program of Colombia is due to a number of factors, including the following: 1) The program has been promoted, coordinated, and directed by a National Nutrition Institute (at present the Nutrition Department of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute), an institution headed by nutrition and public health professional personnel and receiving technical and financial assistance from PASB/WHO, FAO, PMA and UNICEF 2)The financial assistance provided by the integrated Food and Nutrition Program (PINA) encouraged the Government of Colombia, with the result that the financial resources of the program are now largely domestic in origin 3) Since the initiation of the program, training of the staff of the Institute has been in progress 4) From the early stages of the program, schools of nutritionists-dietitians have been organized, as have been courses in public health nutrition for graduate physicians and the Regional Center for Training in Domestic Economy and Applied Nutrition (CRECENA) 5) The program, which has a public health orientation, is based on the principles of the epidemiology of preventive medicine 6) Most of the research studies of the Institute are aimed at finding practical solutions to the nutrition problems peculiar to the country concerned 7) The program coordinates, at the international, national, departmental and local ...(AU)
