Abstract
Agglutination-lysis tests and kidney cultures in Vervoorst's medium has been used to investigate the prevalence of leptospirosis in 98 swine from the department of Tumbes, Peru and 202 cattle (110 from the department of Tubes and 92 from Ecuador) slaughtered in the abbatoir of Tumbes city. The main results were:

Out of 109 kidney cultures of cattle from Tumbes, one strain was isolated (V-42) and identified as a new serotype of Leptospira. None of the 92 kidney cultures of cattle from Ecuador was positive

2) Out of 94 swine sera, 22 (23.4 percent) were positive, most of them to pomona. Out of 110 sera of cattle from Tumbes, 32 (29.2 percent) were positive, most of them to pomona and sejroe-hebdomadis. Out of 92 sera of cattle from Ecuador, 25 (27.2 percent) were positive, most them to sejroe-hebdomadis

3) Out of 103 serological reactions using the strain of Leptospira V-42 as antigen, two sera were positive, one of swine and other of cattle from Tumbes
