During 1945, many notable advances were shown in health activities in the Dominican Republic. Three new hospitals have been built, one in Ciudad Trujillo, one in Santiago de los Caballeros and one in San Cristóbal. Definite improvement was achieved in the various health services such as sanitary engineering; foodstuffs control; drugs; supervision of medical practices and parmacies. From January to November there were 52,958 births (28.5 per 1,000 inhabitants); 18,822 deaths (10.1); 117,487 cases of malaria; 32,732 syphilis; 25,175 hookworm; 21,650 influenza; 14,346 gonorrhea; 12,123 yaws; 10,699 gastroenteritis 9,215 intestinal parasites; 3,739 unclassified dysentery; 2,220 amoebic dysentery; 2,199 tuberculosis; 2,111 penumonia; 2,101 dengue; 2,070 infectious conjunctivitis; or a total of 270,942 cases (with 4,187 deaths) including 2,000 cases of other diseases. The principal causes of death were: malaria (1,043); gastroenteritis (911); tuberculosis (611); pneumonia (374); typhoid (240); syphilis (149); tetanus of the newborn (141); intestinal parasites (120); hookworm (96); other communicable diseases causing less than 90 deaths each. There are 18 provincial health centers throughout the country. In some sections a decrease was noted in malaria, though in others there was an increase towards the end of the year.
