The study was planned to asses the frequency and clinical importance of Chagas' infection in a population exposed to the tratomine vector. It was carried out in Tibú, Norte de Santander, in the Catacumbo River basin, one of the regions with higher endemicity for trypanosomiasis in Colombia. Eighty nine men, 30 to 52 years old, workers of the Colombia Petroleum Company, who had lived most of their lives in that area were studied. Serological rsults were the only criterion for selection: 30 were positive and 59 negative. The complete clinical study showed only electrocardiographic abnormalities. Five pathological ECG were found, four in the positive group (13 per cent) and one in the negative group (2 per cent). The differences were statistically significant. The findings in the positive cases were diffuse disorders in the repolarization and ventricular extrasystoles. One of the four positive persons died suddently and the autopsy showed myocarditis. T. cruzi was isolated from three of the positive individuals with normal ECG. There was neither megacolon nor megaesophagus detected in the positive casesThese results seem to indicate that Chagas' disease may be a frequent and important cause of cardiopathy in the region studied, since of 89 apparently healthy persons, not less than 3.4 per cent showed ECG changes compatible with a myocarditis most probably chagasic in origin and the ...(AU)
