La ingestión de vitamina A en Latinoamérica y el Caribe
The 1967 joint FAO/WHO expert group on vitamin A requirements stated that in Europe and the United States, where reported vitamin A intakes ranged from about 3,000 to 9,000 I.U. per person per day, vitamin A deficiency is rarely seen. On the other hand, in Asian and Far Eastern areas where a majority of reported intakes ranged from 1,000 to 2,500 I.U., clinical vitamin A deficiency occurred in parts of the populationAccording to surveys in Latin America, carried out by national nutrition institutes and organizations, 72 percent of the localities surveyed had average intakes under 3,000 I.U. per person per day, and 15 percent, under 1,000 I.U. When standards of estimated requirements or allowances were applied, 46 percent of the localities and 54 percent of the individual families had less than 50 percent of the estimated requirements. In 66 percent of the localities, pre-formed vitamin A was under 30 percent of the totalAccording to the Interdepartmental Committee on Nutrition for National Defense (ICNND) surveys in South American and Caribbean areas, 60 percent of the localities surveyed had intakes under 3,000 I.U. per person per day, and 26 percent, under 1,000 I.U. The average figure for the nine areas or countries was 3,068 I.U. per person per day. Vitamin A of animal origin varied between 12 and 50 percent of the totalIn the ICNND Central American surveys, the average intake was ...(AU)
