The time of appearance in the brain of rabies antigen detectable by fluorescent antibodies (FA) was determined in suckling and adult mice inoculated intracerebrally with a street rabies virus poolen_US
Rabies antigen was found in the brains of 28 of 30 suckling mice on day 3 post-inoculation, while all the adult mice but one were negative. On day 4 all the suckling mouse brains were positive and 18 of 30 adult mouse brains were still negative. The amount of antigen found in the suckling mouse brains was greater than in the adult mice. The differences observed were statistically significant showing dependence between the age of the mice and both, the time of appearance and the amount of antigen present in the brainsen_US
Inoculation of suckling mice and daily FA staining of their brains starting on the first day post-inoculation is recommended to obtain rapid and accurate rabies diagnosis, when the FA stain of the original sample is negative(AU)en_US
