1) The development of the biological and social sciences and the rapid creation and expansion of hospitals and health services have not appreciably changed the image of the nurse. The world over, she still reamins the lady-in-white. This image has stood in the way of the full development of the individual nurse (who often wishes to retain this image) and her incorporation into the modern health team 2) Where prepared nurses have been able to interpret their changing role, health authorities have recognized that organized nursing services are essential to the attainment of the objectives of the health program. Consequently, a number of trends are developing 3) Preparation for leadership in nursing has been incorporated into the curricula of schools of nursing which have up-graded basic educational requirements and enriched programs of study to include social and health aspects of nursing care 4) Prepared professional nurses have been delegated the responsibility for developing and administering schools of nursing; other members of the health team participate with nurses in the teaching program 5) Nursing service units within country health structures at national, intermediate and local levels have been created, and prepared nurses have been given the responsibility for organizing nursing services, both in hospitals and the community.
