The number of spoonfuls of powdered milk the pregnant women took each day varied considerably; half the women took fewer than the Service had stipulated. It was found that half of them shared the milk with members of their family, primarily their husbands and children. The women who took more spoonfuls than indicated shared with more members of their families and, on the average had more children than the women who did not share the milk. Half the pregnant women in the group under study considered the amount of milk provided to them to be insufficient. A small proportion (2 out of each 10), stated that the staff of the clinic had taught them how to prepare the powdered milkThe data further revealed that most of the pregnant women were in favor of powdered milk; those who were against it, did not stop taking it.
